Open Question: Who is More Fragile You or the Baby?
Potential short answer: you. Or at least: me.
The first newborn I’ve ever been around for more than a solid hour was my own.
She looks wise, adorable, full of potential, but also fragile (hmmm, must be Italian. Anyone? ANYONE?)
Sadly, I have a long history of never keeping anything in mint condition for long, though my wife Bridget is the kind of person that is literally wearing new sneakers before she’s even checked out and keeping them fresh for years.
It’s of course 100% good to be gentle with a newborn. Part of getting to know these tiny humans is watching them take it all in and gauging their reactions to things. Let her reactions guide (ahem, halt) any overreactions. “Graceful” is not a term used to describe new dads, or at least this one.
From tiny clothes that are hard to put on to a light sleepers that are even harder to put down, there is a lot of learning to be had. Potential final answer: Noticing that if she went what felt like crashing down onto the crib mattress and didn't so much as grimace. Then neither should I / you.
